The chord

A chord in a circle is a straight line connecting two points at the circumference. The arc that is subtended by the chord corresponds to a midpoint angle in the center. In other words, at the circumference, the tension in the midpoint angle is transferred to the chord. This implies that the chord at the circumference is a direct expression of the midpoint angle.
In the circle of the Zodiac, the chord connects the Zodiacal positions of two planets that form an aspect. In other words, the chord subtends the circle arc along the aspect’s Zodiacal trajectory.

Direct translation

The function of the chord should not be confused with that of the radius. The radius is an intermediary. It connects the center with the circumference and vice versa. It is able to ‘shuttle’ between the two (6.2). Because of its position, the chord is not able to do so and consequently does not have that shuttle function.
The inherent significance of the chord is based on its length and place. These correspond to the width of the midpoint angle and to the direction in which that angle has been drawn. In this way, the chord translates the tension of the midpoint angle directly (without intermediary) to a line segment at the circumference.

Through the chord, the midpoint angle has its own point of application at the circumference.

Dimensions

The chord is always perpendicular to the radius (3.1.1). Consequently, it does not function in the same dimension as the radius, but in the realm directly under or above the radius’ area of influence - either the realm of the Center or that of the circumference. As we know, there are multiple facets – all with their own field of knowledge – to the one reality (25.2.a). In the case of the chord, its area of influence is at the circumference, which means that there is no way it can serve as a transferring agent like the radius (3.1.1).

The string

In our exploratory journey on this website so far, the chord is a new phenomenon. In many languages, the word for ‘geometrical chord’ also means ‘string’ (French: corde, Spanish: cuerda, Italian: corda). This term further clarifies its function: Through both of its points of application at the circumference, the straight chord is tightened by the aspect’s arc and begins to serve as a string. It directly puts the circumference under tension. In this way, in its own realm, the chord calls forth a tone with a vibrational frequency that corresponds to its length and the tension of its arc. In the regular body corresponding to the angle of the aspect in question, the other angular points will resonate with it as well.
This tone is therefore a physical expression of the Center at the circumference.

Executor and crystallizer

Sounds and tones, and vibrations in general, create forms. As a matter of fact, any form that appears in our physical world is preceded by a sound or mental vibration.
Through its points of force application, the vibrational frequency of the chord is automatically transferred to the circumference. As a result, the corresponding forms will crystallize in the matter present at the circumference.

The chord imposes its vibrational frequency on matter. This shows its function as the direct manifestor (without intermediary) of the tension that is put out by the center.

In this way, the aspect is called forth and activated as form, as circumstance, at the circumference. This circumstance will reflect the character of the aspect-forming planets in their Zodiacal positions.
